Our Story

Beggs Funeral Home has been serving the Monticello and Tallahassee area community for over 100 years. We’re thankful to be an important part of this community and will continue our longstanding legacy of helping families honor their loved ones.

The Vibrant History of Beggs Funeral Home

For over a hundred years the Beggs Family has been involved in the life and customs of North Florida. When T. J. Beggs, Sr. took over the funeral home in 1886 from his father-in-law, W.L. Parramore, our country was just recovering from the Civil War. Grover Cleveland was president of the United States, and North Florida was a cotton trade area. Death in the nineteenth century, was treated with great pomp and ceremony, and Beggs was ready to see that funerals in our area were performed with tasteful dignity and all were served.

In 1916 "Little Tom," son of T.J. Beggs, Sr., graduated from Cincinnati College of Embalming, thus introducing embalming to this area. Prior to this time, funerals had to be held immediately, as there was little known about preservation. Prior to the widespread use of embalming, loved ones who'd died were washed, dressed, and laid out at home by family members. But with a mortuary college graduate in the area, families found great relief in entrusting the care of their dear one to someone specifically trained to tend to every logistical and scientific detail. This is a tradition we are privileged to continue today.

Each one of our staff members has experienced deep personal loss; your pain is not something we can't relate to or don't understand. We know how it feels when a cherished person dies, and we want to help others who are going through it. More than a job, this is our mission: to live lives of service,  to enter into the sacred intimacy of another's grief, and honor every confidence to the best of our ability. It is our pledge to you.

From early Confederate soldier burials and horse-drawn hearses to the modern funerals of today, Beggs Funeral Home has had the sacred honor of serving our precious community. We are available to help 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

You can rest knowing Beggs is always there for you.
